Dosage / Direction for Use
Tab Adult Most infections, UTI, mild to moderate lower resp tract infections (eg, bronchitis), pyelonephritis 250 mg bid. More severe lower resp tract infections or pneumonia (if suspected) 500 mg bid. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 1 g single dose. Lyme disease Adult & childn >12 yr 500 mg bid for 14 days. Childn Most infections 125 mg bid. Otitis media or severe infections 250 mg bid. <12 yr Lyme disease 250 mg bid for 14 days. Oral susp Childn 12 yr-3 mth & infant Most infections 10 mg/kg bid, max: 250 mg daily. Otitis media or more severe infections 15 mg/kg bid, max: 500 mg daily for 14 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals for optimum absorption.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins & other β-lactams.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins & other β-lactams. Pseudomembranous colitis. Diabetics & phenylketonurics. Prolonged use. May impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Tab: Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction.
Side Effects / Adverse Reactions
Overgrowth of Candida; eosinophilia; headache, dizziness; GI disturbances including diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain; transient increases of hepatic enzyme levels (ALT/AST, LDH).
Interactions
Lower bioavailability w/ antacid; estrogen reabsorption & reduced efficacy w/ OCs.
