Special Precautions:
Not indicated for viral infections. Patients w/ pulmonary disease, neurological disorders & allergic diathesis; anemia, DM, electrolyte imbalance, debilitating conditions & vit B (particularly folate) deficiency. Discontinue at any sign of hemolysis in those w/ suspected G6PD deficiency. Severe or irreversible peripheral neuropathy. Acute, subacute & chronic pulmonary reactions. Pseudomembranous colitis. Monitor closely for signs of hepatitis (particularly in long-term use); GFR. Do not use antacid prep containing Mg trisilicate. False +ve urinary glucose (if tested for reducing substances); false +ve reaction or increased values of bilirubin, blood ureic nitrogen, non-protein nitrogen, creatine & creatinine determination, glucose (Benedict's technique), alkaline phosphatase, cephalin cholesterol, thymol cloudiness, SGOT & SGPT. Hepatic dysfunction. May affect ability to drive or operate machines.
Side Effects / Adverse Reactions:
Nausea, anorexia, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, sialodenitis, pancreatitis, pseudomembranous colitis; hepatitis (including active hepatitis & cholestatic jaundice); acute, subacute & chronic pulmonary reactions w/ fever, chills, cough, chest pain, dyspnea, pulmonary infiltration (w/ consolidation or pleural effusion); hemolytic anemia, granulocytopenia, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, megaloblastic anemia & aplastic anemia; confusion, depression, optic neuritis, headache, dizziness, nystagmus, somnolence, vertigo & peripheral neuropathy, increased benign intracranial pressure; exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme (including Stevens-Johnson syndrome), maculopapular rash, rash erythematous or eczema, pruritus, urticaria or angioedema, alopecia & Lupus-like syndrome; asthenia, fever, chills, malaise; psychiatric & behavioral symptoms.
Dosage / Direction for Use:
Adult Non-complicated UTI (including vesical catheter-associated UTI) 50-100 mg qid for 7 days or at least 3 days after obtaining sterile urine sample. Specific prophylaxis of non-complicated acute UTI caused by sensitive strains of gm +ve & -ve pathogens 50-100 mg as single dose in the night. Prophylaxis of vesical catheter-associated UTI 50-100 mg as single dose in the night. Non-complicated cystitis & cystourethritis 100 mg every 6 hr for 7 days. Asymptomatic bacteriuria 100 mg every 6 hr for 3 days. Prophylaxis due to anatomical &/or function disorders of urinary tract, pelvis prolapse surgery &/or urinary incontinence 50-100 mg as single dose in the night. Max: 400 mg/day. Pregnant women Non-complicated cystitis & cystourethritis, UTI 100 mg every 6 hr for 10 days. Asymptomatic bacteriuria 100 mg every 6 hr for 7 days. Max: 400 mg/day. Childn ≥12 yr & >40 kg Non-complicated UTI (including vesical catheter-associated UTI) 50 mg qid for 7 days or at least 3 days after obtaining sterile urine sample. ≥12 yr Specific prophylaxis of non-complicated acute UTI caused by sensitive strains of gm +ve & -ve pathogens 50-100 mg as single dose in the night. Prophylaxis of vesical catheter-associated UTI 50-100 mg as single dose in the night. Prophylaxis due to anatomical &/or function disorders of urinary tract, pelvis prolapse surgery &/or urinary incontinence 50-100 mg as single dose in the night. Max: 7 mg/kg/day or 400 mg/day.
