Dosage / Overdosage: In hypertension, the usual starting and maintenance dose is 50 mg once daily. The dose may be increased if necessary to 100 mg daily based on blood pressure response in one or two divided doses.
For patients with intravascular volume-depletion (e.g., those treated with high-dose diuretics) a starting dose of 25 daily should be considered.
An initial dose of 25 mg once daily is suggested for the elderly over 75 years of age.
Losartan potassium (KENZAR) may be administered with or without food.
In diabetic nephropathy, an initial dose of 50 mg once daily. increased to 100 mg once daily depending on blood pressure.
Administration:May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity. Renal artery stenosis & hyperkalemia. Concomitant use w/ K-sparing diuretics. Pregnancy & lactation.
Side Effects / Adverse Reactions: Dizziness, asthenia/fatigue & vertigo.
Interactions: Reduced levels of active metabolite w/ rifampin & fluconazole. Increased serum K w/ K-sparing diuretics (eg, spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride), K supplements or salt containing K. Attenuated antihypertensive effect w/ NSAID indomethacin.
