Dosage / Direction for Use
Adult Acute diarrhea Initially 2 cap followed by 1 cap after each loose bowel movement. Max: 8 cap/day. Chronic diarrhea Initially 2 cap followed by 1 cap after each loose bowel movement. Then reduce dose to meet daily requirements; administer as single or in divided doses. Ave daily maintenance dose: 2-4 cap/day
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Constipation, swollen abdomen or abdominal pain, acute dysentery characterized by blood in stools & high fever; pseudomembranous colitis, active ulcerative colitis, meningitis or history of liver disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
Acute diarrhea persist >2 days, symptoms worsen, if abdominal swelling or bulging or fever develops. Toxic megacolon in AIDS patients. Maintian adequate hydration. Decreased urination, increased thirst, dizziness & lightheadedness or wrinkled skin may develop.
Side Effects / Adverse Reactions
Dry mouth, abdominal pain, distention or discomfort, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, flatulence, dyspepsia, constipation, epigastric pain, paralytic ileus & toxic megacolon.
Interactions
Increased plasma levels w/ ritonavir, quinidine, oral desmopressin, itraconazole or ketoconazole, gemfibrozil. Increased constipation w/ drugs that slow down the action of stomach & intestines (eg, drugs for depression & cold & allergy medications). Drugs causing drowsiness.
